IO Interactive's Hitman: World of Assassination, housed within Hitman 3 on PS5 and PS4, has now reached an impressive milestone of 75 million total players.
The developer made the announcement on its social channels today:
"Achieving this as an independent studio is monumental," the post reads. "IOI is more solid than ever, driven by ambition and supported by our incredible community."
Hitman: World of Assassination began with the first of the modern titles back in 2016, which was released episodically.
The studio followed this up with the release of Hitman 2 in 2018, dropping the episodic approach and launching it as one package. The first game's content could be brought into Hitman 2 as an add-on, which previous owners received for free; IO Interactive's vision for an all-inclusive experience started here.
Between the release of the first two games, the developer split from publisher Square Enix to become fully independent, retaining the Hitman IP.
In 2021, Hitman 3 was released, with progression from the previous entries able to be carried across. Later, the game would become World of Assassination, including all three modern campaigns as well as all additional content.
It's been a fascinating journey, and while the series is now on hiatus, it's still receiving updates, and a PSVR2 port is coming in March. IO is set to follow up its successful trilogy with Project 007, which feels like a match made in heaven.

It's a game where you can kill people by making them skip and fall of a building with a banana peel. In other words, it is a perfect game.
Bought it day one, finished it and never looked back. Need to finish two more games and I Will be installing this one again.
Love all of the Hitman games!
Waiting for the PSVR2 version! This will be my first time playing a Hitman game, and the reception of the PSVR1 version was positive from what I saw.
Finally a new PSVR2 game on the level of RE4, RE8 and GT7!
One of best ultimate packages (products) in gaming for value. I always recommend to anyone.
One word....
Backlog.
Sigh...
@hitmanfan47 I don't belive you.
That's awesome actually, deserves all the numbers it can get. It's one of the best things going.
Also waiting for the PSVR version. Such a consistent series of games.
I still haven't started the third game - the first two were excellent however and just what stealthy espionage fans needed when Splinter Cell dried up. I'm really excited to see what this dev does with the Bond license.
Very well deserved. It never comes immediately to mind when asked about my favourite games of all time, but every now and again I go back to it and just think what an amazing package. If given some thought it's probably in my top 10 games of all time
@Blauwe_Chimay
They've added so much since that you'll find yourself with an overwhelming amount of content to come back to. Really gotta love how much the devs have supported Hitman.
Square Enix would be so ‘“didn’t meet our expectations” rn 😎
I know this is over the space of 9 years and three games, but 75 million sounds like an awful lot. I’m skeptical that it’s 75 million separate individual players. I wonder how they calculated that.
The best I could find was the entire series (including all those early Gen games, Absolution, Blood Money, etc) sold over 16 million copies at the time Hitman 2 came out. Of course Hitman 3 was a huge success, but still… And I know people have played the game without buying it through services like PS+, but it still doesn’t seem to add up. Especially considering that if you’re saying 75 million separate people, then one fan who played all three entries of the World of Assassination separately, or played the game several times would count as 1 person.
Maybe the number is right. I mean I’m one who played a little of Hitman 1, so maybe I’m included 😄
It's a brilliant game with high replay value and I'm really looking forward to its PSVR2 mode
That number does seem unbelievably high, but I'm glad it's been a big success for them. I've had a blast with the modern trilogy, and still playing it (I've been really into the Freelancer mode lately).
The value is incredible because of how intricately crafted it is. Initially I was skeptical about only having six ‘sandbox’ mission maps per game. But the replayability just for the core story missions is almost vast. I was addicted for a good few months a couple of years ago.
Been there from day 1 Hitman 2016, each subsequent installment was a downgrade in terms of maps but still a joy to play. If you started the game today, ooft, hundreds of hours of fun.
And fun I did have. 100%ed the original game, then 100%ed Hitman 2 (redoing the 2016 levels) and DLC list, then Platted Hitman 3 on PS4 and PS5. Hokkaido is the best map, don't @ me.
This never gets uninstalled on machine. Always coming back for that glorious virtual tourism. So looking forward to the psvr2 version in March. Was pretty bummed when the delay was announced, but I reckon they are gonna get it on point this time round. I would kill for another map.
Great number and I love the game (except for the stupid online connection and timed target shenanigans) but I must ask how they define this
If I remember it was on Game Pass which okay I question what counts as a player for that too (is it install, one trophy, opening the menu, 10 hours etc) but it was also a free demo for Hitman 3. Does the free demo count as a player? The person still installs the game.
Is each game a separate player? For example I bought all 3 separately am I 3 players in their eyes?
@Th3solution Alot of these types of stats you can't properly keep track of without heavy stalking they probably mean anyone who played Hitman regardless of how would count as one
Also them saying they are more solid than ever is great news. I heard a story that Hitman 2 didn't have full cutscenes because they didn't have enough money to pay the animators so thats why they had the mostly static images with dialogue overlayed over it
@GoatFace04
That is true. Would be great if they remade the cutscenes to be consistent with the other games, then patched them in.
One of the best games out.
Well deserved, one of the best gaming packages ever.
Loved them. Wasn't sure about the episodic approach but it helped me spend a LOT of time in those early levels...Paris and Sapienza especially good memories!
Im still remember the very first game that i play. Im the few that play since the first game. And i still love the series. I can say ...i play all hitman games. And hope for a new entry in the future.
